Backlash commissioned MARYAM, a prestigious Italian tannery specializing in horsehide, to create this original leather. The base leather is carefully crafted from Italian horse butt leather. After dyeing, the horse butt is oiled and spun in a drum while applying heat and steam, compressing and shrinking the fibers to create a fine, lustrous texture, elasticity, and a strong grain. The leather is then finished with wax, dye, and oil (such as beef tallow) to create oil heat-shrunk leather. The leather is designed to have large ridges and fine grain throughout, resulting in a moderate thickness compared to regular horse leather. Despite its powerful appearance, heat-shrunk horsehide is supple, making it exceptionally easy to handle. Its flexibility increases with use, making it incredibly easy to use and practical for everyday use, a feat not expected for leather goods.
